Terry & Terry Architecture — Oakland, CA

Skyline House features a modern design with wood siding and glass walls opening to a patio.

Skyline House is a rebuild by Terry & Terry Architecture, located atop the Eastbay mountain range overlooking Oakland. The project replaces a post-fire home and was designed for a young family seeking open interior spaces that frame expansive southwest views of the Bay and Golden Gate, along with a strong connection to the existing garden. The property is defined by large redwood trees flanking its sides, focusing attention from a sheltered front garden towards the rear vistas. The central design gesture is a wood-clad volume that contains the common areas and visually links the front garden to a rear deck. The roof is shaped to create a tall ventilation space inspired by the movement of coastal fog, promoting cross-ventilation and interior cooling from afternoon breezes—a practical response to the site's elevation and variable climate. The kitchen was remodeled to open directly to the front garden, with outdoor dining defined by a concrete bench and planter. At the rear, the dining area opens to a deck, where an extended roof structure forms a trellis for shade. A new stair continues the wood enclosure to the lower floor, providing access to a media room, bedroom, and office.
