WA Design — Saratoga, California

Saratoga Creek House by WA Design stands on a large wooded property in Saratoga, California, in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The project's brief called for a residence closely attuned to its natural setting, shaped by the presence of mature heritage oaks and a meandering seasonal creek marking the eastern boundary. The design intent centered on preserving the oak woodland and responding sensitively to the riparian landscape that defines the site. The residence is composed of smaller building volumes linked by glass-enclosed walkways and vaulted roof forms, weaving through the oak canopies to preserve protected root zones. Outdoor spaces, including courtyards and a pool area, are integrated into the site’s gentle slope, while a granite walk and a serpentine sculpture echo the curves of the creek. Material selections include white cement panels that lighten shaded areas, zinc standing-seam roofing, custom wood windows, and a palette of bronze, natural stone, concrete, and dark woods on the interior. Special features such as a bronze drop soffit and a freestanding glass-tread staircase were custom-designed to emphasize craft and enhance the interplay of light and texture throughout the home.
