Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects — Mercer Island, WA

Brook Bay is a two-story residence set into a hillside on Mercer Island, Washington. The project was shaped by its site orientation and the goal to maximize outlooks toward Lake Washington and Seward Park. The program places main living and sleeping spaces on the upper level to take advantage of elevated views, while support spaces occupy the ground floor. Spatial organization and material selection distinguish public and private zones within the house. Entertaining areas feature copper panels, blackened steel, and concrete both inside and out, expressing a deliberate material palette. The master suite is marked by a lower ceiling, light-colored walls, wood siding on the exterior, and wood flooring, establishing an intimate character distinct from the public spaces. Craft was a focus throughout, with architectural details such as the steel staircase, bespoke doors, and integrated furnishings realized in collaboration with local craftsmen.
