Suyama Peterson Deguchi — 2006
Courtyard House is a single-family residence designed by Suyama Peterson Deguchi and completed in 2006. Located on a steep corner lot within a densely built urban neighborhood, the project was shaped by both the desire to capture westerly views and the lack of on-site privacy. The brief called for private outdoor areas despite the surrounding density. To address these conditions, the primary living spaces were positioned forward on the lot to take advantage of the views. This move allowed space behind and within the building footprint for a sequence of internal courtyards. These outdoor areas serve as focal points for the interior and provide secluded outdoor environments for the residents, creating a sense of shelter while visually connecting the house to its site.
