Dutchess County Residence Main House is a 5,500-square-foot contemporary home by Allied Works Architecture, completed in 2012 on a former estate in Dutchess County, New York. Set at the upper edge of a broad meadow within a 400-acre property, the commission included the main house, a guesthouse, and a private gallery designed to accommodate both family life and the display of a significant contemporary art collection. The site's rolling topography of fields, forest, and streams informed the placement of the residence to capitalize on long views across the Hudson River Valley.
The main house is organized around a two-level glass helix structure, interconnected by double-height spaces and a sculptural central stair. Three stone-walled courts physically root the building to its landscape while guiding internal circulation. The exterior envelope is a composition of transparent, translucent, and opaque glass and steel panels, modulating daylight and framing exterior vistas. A permanent, 360-degree video installation by artist Doug Aitken is integrated into the building skin, creating a dynamic visual interface between inside and out. An interior designer was engaged for furnishings and finishes throughout the project.
