Anonymous Architects — Los Angeles, CA, 2015

Modern house with wood siding cantilevered on a hillside, featuring large windows and exposed concrete supports.

Completed in 2015, Competitions by Anonymous Architects sits among mature trees on a hillside in Los Angeles, in a context that combines a sense of remoteness with proximity to dense urban development. The brief emphasized preserving the site's natural character, resulting in a placement that allows existing trees to remain and positions the house near the center of the lot to maximize privacy from neighboring buildings and the street. The steep terrain facilitated the use of cantilevering to reduce the impact of foundations and retain as much native ground as possible for landscape planting. The design organizes approximately 2,000 square feet into two distinct living spaces beneath a single roof. The main residence contains two bedrooms and is intended for a family of four. A secondary unit, separated by an open breezeway, is independent with its own bedroom, living area, kitchen, and bathroom. This flexible component is used daily as an office and entertainment space but can be closed off for use by guests. The structural approach and spatial layout respond directly to the hillside condition, privacy concerns, and the desire to integrate with the mature landscape.
