Two Sheds House, designed by AW ARCH on Martha’s Vineyard, is a 4,000-square-foot residence conceived for a Boston-based family seeking an informal gathering place for friends and relatives. The brief called for a relaxed environment, with an emphasis on contemporary art and an unpretentious lifestyle, responding directly to the family’s design background. The house sits on a gently sloping oceanfront site, overlooking Lambert’s Cove and Vineyard Sound, with the local scrub oak landscape and coastal conditions shaping both orientation and material selection.
The design departs from regional colonial prototypes, instead organizing the program into two staggered, shed-like volumes clad in Western Red Cedar, with zinc roofs and aluminum doors and windows intended to weather over time. The two primary volumes are aligned to maximize water views and provide direct outdoor access from every room. A boardwalk connects a detached guesthouse and garage to the glass entry of the main house, extending through to a deck and lap pool that form a communal outdoor space. Modified ridge and gable roof forms are expressed internally, directing attention outward and connecting the interiors with the surrounding seascape.
