Crestvale Residence is a new build located in the Barton Hills area of Austin, Texas, designed by Clark | Richardson Architects for a young family with an emphasis on sustainability and occupant health. The project addressed site conditions common to the region, including solar exposure, and responded to the client's specific need for a home that minimized potentially harmful materials due to electrical sensitivity. The residence received a 5 Star Austin Energy Green Build Award and served as a case study for Austin Energy Green Building in 2022.
The design incorporates broad roof forms to provide solar shading and connects all main living and primary spaces with adjacent outdoor areas. Materials were selected for both performance and health: electrical wiring uses a cobalt coating in place of PVC; rock wool insulation replaces conventional fiberglass; and interior surfaces are finished with mineral-based, toxin-free clay paint. The walls employ magnesium oxide board rather than standard gypsum, while the exterior stucco system uses an integrated rain screen to prevent moisture accumulation. These details contribute to the residence's focus on environmental quality and long-term durability, with a contemporary, modern expression throughout.
