The Butterfly Residence in Austin, Texas is a renovation and expansion of an existing midcentury modern house. The brief called for restoring key living spaces and creating new areas that reflect both contemporary minimalism and the original architectural character. This approach guided the reconfiguration of the residence, including formal living spaces and a northern addition housing primary communal functions. The project retains and enhances the original formal living area, now featuring a sunken seating area, a grand piano, and a light-filled library. A private northern addition incorporates a media room, kitchen, and dining area beneath a beamless vaulted ceiling lined in hemlock wood and opens to the landscape with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. The cedar-clad carport and visually floating rooflines mark the approach to a rear entry, while the distinctive butterfly roof collects rainwater for sustainable drainage. At the rear, a hallway leads to a new principal suite overlooking an enlarged backyard. The design also integrates two work-from-home spaces and a landscaped backyard, balancing updated functionality with midcentury elements.
