Gray Organschi Architecture — Adirondacks, NY

Schroon Lake House is a contemporary intervention by Gray Organschi Architecture, located in the Adirondacks, New York. The project began as the adaptive reuse of a 20-year-old builder-grade log cabin, with the objective of creating a minimal, modern retreat that withdraws visually into the surrounding landscape and frames continuous engagement with the adjacent lake. All evidence of the cabin’s original log construction was removed. The architects retained and reinforced the existing structure, then introduced new structural components to support an open plan layout. The envelope was updated with bio-based insulation and high-performance glazing to improve thermal performance. Exterior surfaces were finished in charcoal zinc cladding, requiring minimal maintenance, while interior spaces feature plaster walls and maple floors. Acoustically isolated rooms ensure a subdued atmosphere, and slender wood details provide subtle warmth and tactility without distraction. Large sliding glass walls orient views and access toward the lake, establishing a quiet interior focused on the water as its defining element.
