GriD Architects — Berkeley Springs, WV, 2025

Ridge House features a wooden exterior with a shed roof, nestled in a wooded setting.

Ridge House is a 1,300-square-foot residence in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, commissioned to replace a ranch house lost to fire. The clients, a painter and an art historian, requested a modest but inspiring retreat to serve as both home and creative space, with particular emphasis on maintaining a strong connection to the river-front site. Functionally, the program includes a painting studio, study, master suite, and open living spaces. GriD Architects organized the new house along a ridge, drawing inspiration from the traditional dog trot form found in Appalachian vernacular architecture. The design arranges private areas in a linear bar running east-west to maximize light and exposures, while public living spaces are oriented toward views of the Potomac River and the adjacent railroad. The approach encourages natural surroundings to infiltrate the interior, reinforcing the dialogue between the building and its setting. Materials and details reflect a contemporary interpretation of regional precedents, balancing modernity with rustic context.
