Hoedemaker Pfeiffer — Wyoming, 2024

Wyoming Retreat by Hoedemaker Pfeiffer features a wood and stone exterior with a pond reflecting the building and surrounding landscape.

Wyoming Retreat by Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is a residential project completed in 2024, situated on 160 acres of riverside land in Wyoming. The design was commissioned by a couple seeking to maximize their fly fishing activities and deepen their connection to the landscape. The house is set low into the site, remaining largely concealed from view outside the property, and responds to the surrounding mountains, which create views in all directions. Site selection was guided by both the need for flood resilience and an interest in integrating the home into the broader river ecosystem, achieved by elevating the structure and excavating land to form a small lake. Under a single expansive roof, the retreat gathers spaces with varying degrees of enclosure, from intimate winter rooms to an open screen porch oriented toward evening light. The interiors respond to the local context through materials and furnishings that reference the Wyoming valley without resorting to cliché. A patterned wool rug, deep upholstery, and a kitchen with blue cabinetry, soapstone counters, and dark hardware create a durable and practical environment. The kitchen, open to the great room, is lit from both sides and supported by a compact, efficient pantry.
