Halflants + Pichette — Sarasota, FL

Indian Beach Residence, designed by Halflants + Pichette, occupies a one-acre waterfront site in Sarasota, Florida. The design responds to two prominent oaks and a significant Indian Mound on the property, with the building’s positioning and massing arranged to preserve these features and reduce the perceived scale. Instead of forming a single structure, the residence is organized as a composition of distinct volumes, anchoring it in the landscape and opening broad views toward Sarasota Bay. The architectural approach prioritizes both transparency and seclusion: large glass panels on the west side provide panoramic bay views and daylight, while the east elevation is more enclosed to ensure privacy from the street. Western terraces extend the home’s living areas outdoors, supporting continuous use in the local climate while connecting interior spaces to the coastal setting. These outdoor rooms, protected from direct sun, serve as extensions of the main living spaces and frame key views of the water and sunsets. Material selections and the deliberate play between solid and glazed elements define the home’s contemporary identity and reflect a considered response to site conditions, balancing openness with a sense of retreat.
