The Porter Residence, designed by skB Architects in Seattle, is a contemporary house shaped by its lakeside setting. The design brief called for maximizing visual and spatial connections to the water while supporting an open plan centered around a main living area. Careful site integration led to lowering the main living spaces to four feet above the lake, which produces a restrained profile in relation to both the water and the surrounding landscape. The entry sequence starts from the road and descends toward the house, where sightlines through the structure frame views of the lake at nearly the same elevation. To optimize daylight and capitalize on western views, the massing is concentrated toward that side, organizing the plan efficiently. The arrangement yields two courtyards: a public one at the entry and a private one facing the lake. A taller building volume provides privacy for the lakeside courtyard by shielding it from neighboring properties.
