Sale House is a 3,900-square-foot single-family residence in Venice, California, occupying a walk-street site shared with the existing 2-4-6-8 House, a studio and garage originally designed by Morphosis in 1978. Johnston Marklee approached the new structure as a response to this context, shaping it to connect with and extend the formal language of the studio-annex while accommodating contemporary living requirements. The design strategy organizes the living area as a base element that anchors the site and absorbs the existing garage, while bedroom and courtyard volumes are arranged as distinct elements referencing the geometry and sequencing of the neighboring studio. Interior spatial compositions transform the original studio's references to platonic forms and primary colors into new room configurations, generating a dialogue between the new residence and the historic annex.
