Hillside Courtyard House

Hillside Courtyard House is a 2,526-square-foot remodel by Kuth Ranieri Architects, situated on a steeply sloping site in Marin County, California. The project reimagines a midcentury residence, responding to the property’s pronounced topography with an approach that emphasizes layered thresholds and a sequence of increasingly private spaces. The design brief called for greater connections between interior rooms and the outdoors and sought to introduce more daylight and openness within the existing footprint. The architects reorganized the plan to strengthen spatial relationships, particularly between the kitchen, dining area, living room, and entry courtyard. The kitchen now facilitates direct visual and physical links to the surrounding spaces, while a new balcony frames views of Mount Tamalpais. The newly added master suite connects directly to the courtyard, creating a fluid transition between the bedroom and bathroom. Material choices such as textured tiles amplify shifts in natural light, and the use of frosted glass in the master suite diffuses illumination and animates surfaces with shadow and movement, enhancing interior dynamism throughout the day.
