LUBOWICKI ARCHITECTURE — Denver, Colorado

Bottle & the Bowl is a residential renovation and addition by LUBOWICKI ARCHITECTURE, located in Denver's Lower Highlands neighborhood. Set on a narrow urban lot, the project was conceived as a response to continued gentrification and the frequent demolition of historic homes in the area. Rather than replace the existing 1894 structure, the design team opted to preserve its stone and brick materials and maintain the pure form of the original house, integrating a contemporary intervention that respects the neighborhood's architectural character. The updated home centers around the insertion of a vaulted skylight, which acts as a 'bottle for light', brightening the original masonry structure. A new corridor and stair connect the front entry to a rear balcony, linking old and new volumes. A private courtyard positioned between the two primary volumes draws light into the social and living spaces, while the thick masonry walls shield the more secluded sleeping areas. The modern addition features a floating roof, lifting at both ends to channel daylight from the courtyard and backyard, and incorporates diaphanous walls to visually extend living spaces towards city views from a back balcony and rooftop deck.
