Fennel Residence

Completed in 2001 by Robert Harvey Oshatz Architect, the Fennel Residence is a floating home moored along the river in Portland, Oregon. The project responded to its aquatic setting, requiring a design that engaged directly with the water's edge while accommodating the unique siting of a house on the river. The residence is structured around a sequence of curved glulam beams, which give the home its characteristic fluid interior profiles and reference the motion of water. The main living spaces, including an open plan living and dining area, are enclosed by a broad glass facade orienting outward to the river and sunset views. Sliding glass doors connect indoor spaces to the exterior deck. A master bedroom is positioned above a study area, overlooking both the main interior and the river beyond. Curved forms are used throughout to define spatial zones and modulate daylight, producing shifting qualities of light and shadow through daily and seasonal cycles.
