Hat Island Residence

Hat Island Residence by Serra Wersinger Architects is a contemporary retreat positioned on a beachfront site in Seattle, Washington. The design responds to the client's desire for both communal gathering spaces and private sleeping quarters, resulting in two distinct structures: a single-story living and dining pavilion, and a separate two-story bedroom wing. The orientation of these volumes shapes an entry courtyard while shielding sleeping areas from noise during late-night gatherings. The bedroom wing is set perpendicular and slightly behind the main pavilion to reduce its visual impact from the beach. Access to generous decks on three sides of the communal building encourages a direct connection to the waterfront, while the arrangement of the two buildings creates a sheltered zone protected from prevailing winds. The materials palette emphasizes durability and low maintenance, supporting the home's use as a vacation property. Large openings frame extensive water views, reinforcing the project's strong visual and spatial relationship with the surrounding landscape.
