Magnolia Mid-Century Modern is the renovation of a 1961 split-level house in Seattle designed by Sheri Olson Architecture, PLLC. The existing home presented circulation challenges, with its front door inaccessible—set halfway back on the site and shielded by the garage. The owners asked to open up internal spaces and improve the sense of entry, prompting the demolition and rebuilding of the attached garage to make way for a landscaped walkway. Chartreuse Landscape Design contributed to the new approach, which leads visitors along concrete pavers to an entry courtyard and a redefined front door. Inside, spatial connections were improved by relocating the utility room and pushing its wall back to create a closet, enhancing openness at the entry. The kitchen was reconfigured with cabinets moved to exterior walls and formerly dividing partitions removed, establishing it as a new social hub tailored to the family's everyday use. The original brick fireplace and sunken conversation pit were removed to unify the living spaces. Exposed beams and a wood ceiling retain the mid-century character, while additions like skylights and new windows introduce daylight and varied spatial qualities to the updated interiors.
