Montecido Residence

Montecido Residence, designed by Shubin Donaldson Architects, is a new home located in Montecito, a community near Santa Barbara, California, characterized by prominent mountain and ocean views. The project is notable within its context for adopting a contemporary architectural approach in an area where such designs are relatively uncommon. The residence is defined by a single main axis, or spine, extending through the structure. At the center, public spaces occupy a zone marked by a shed roof and a long gallery designed to display art. The open plan facilitates flexible contemporary living, with a glass-and-steel fireplace used as a sculptural element to separate living and dining functions. The master suite, including bedroom and bath, occupies the northern end of the layout, while guest accommodations and a three-car garage are positioned at the opposite end. The construction features an exposed rafter system supporting a metal roof, and exterior walls composed of plaster and extensive glass.
