Shubin Donaldson Architects — Santa Barbara, CA
Riviera Residence by Shubin Donaldson Architects is a three-level home in Santa Barbara’s Riviera neighborhood, responding to a site with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, a canyon, and the Santa Ynez mountains. The house delivers a full program, including open living spaces, multiple bedrooms and baths, two home offices, a gym, outdoor terraces, and a lap pool, within a relatively compact 3,200-square-foot footprint. The design accommodates the steep site by reusing the existing foundation and caissons. Existing building materials were carefully dismantled and donated for reuse. Sustainability informed key moves, with the house oriented for passive solar gains and cross-ventilation, reducing reliance on active heating and cooling systems. Photovoltaic panels supply electricity, while separate solar systems heat water for both domestic use and the pool. Double-pane windows, UV-resistant glass, and extensive exterior overhangs further improve energy performance. The entry sequence is marked by a glass canopy and ground-to-roof glazing introducing abundant natural light. Inside, neutral finishes, dark walnut floors, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves pair with large windows that frame the landscape. Four terraces and generous glazing encourage an indoor-outdoor connection, while each room is positioned to take in natural light and views throughout the day.
