Gladwyne Residence

Gladwyne Residence is a single-story house on a terraced site in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, designed by Stephen Varenhorst Architects for a retired couple downsizing from a larger suburban home. The brief called for a more compact and sustainable dwelling that could support emerging lifestyle needs, including dedicated zones for retreat, work, and gathering. The massing is composed to maintain a quiet profile within its setting, with the plan organized in a U-shaped configuration around a private central courtyard. This arrangement introduces natural light deep into the interior and establishes visual connection to the landscape while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. The plan radiates from a central kitchen, creating a spatial hierarchy with three bedrooms and supporting spaces positioned for easy circulation and flexibility. Extensive glazing in main living areas frames views toward gardens, wooded slopes, and the courtyard, accentuating the connection between indoors and out. The exterior is clad in Accoya wood, chosen for its durability and low-maintenance qualities, and is detailed with a restrained material palette. Continuous insulation and a rain screen wall system contribute to energy efficiency and durable construction. The project emphasizes clarity in planning, material selection, and detailing, reflecting an approach grounded in both architectural rigor and environmental responsiveness.
