Inside Out Home is a modern residence in Boulder, Colorado, designed by Tres Birds Workshop for the firm’s founding principal, Michael Moore. The project involved the unconventional deconstruction and reconstruction of a 1980s house originally built by a local sculpture professor. The renovation approach centered on assessing and reusing as much of the existing structure and materials as possible. The original caisson foundation, dictated by local soil conditions, enabled the addition of a second story without structural reinforcement. The remodel included replacing windows for increased energy efficiency and opening east-facing walls to enhance views of the surrounding trees. Material reuse defines the project’s character: the former galvanized steel roof is recast as siding, wood framing from the garage becomes an exposed roof element, and rigid insulation floats between the timber and steel envelope. The house utilizes photovoltaic panels for solar power, and fluid-applied waterproofing was used for the exterior. The interior exposes structural plywood and douglas fir, foregoing drywall for an unadorned finish. In the bathroom, reclaimed porcelain tiles from a local artist line the walls in a subtle sequence of color. The kitchen juxtaposes wood structure with a black slate floor and custom cabinetry. The landscape is shaped by gardens and a beekeeping operation.
