Watermill Residence, completed in 2012 by Andrew Berman Architect, is a 7,200-square-foot home located in Watermill, NY. Designed for a multi-generational family, the project is positioned to articulate a sequence of outdoor rooms including an entry court, sports field, shaded courtyard, and pool terrace, connecting the architecture with the landscape in a deliberate manner.
The interior arrangement focuses on enclosure, scale, and the spatial connection of inside and outside. An open section through the house allows daylight to reach deep interior zones. Materials include board-formed and polished concrete, flush bleached cedar siding, Douglas fir structural elements, and interior paneling. The roofs are planted with local grasses and wildflowers, forming an elevated meadow. The layout takes advantage of prevailing breezes for passive cooling. Geothermal wells are used for both cooling and radiant heating, while concealed solar collectors atop the roof provide energy for the pool.
