Riverdale Residence

Riverdale Residence is a renovated single-family home in the Bronx, NY, originally built in 1960 on a landscaped property facing the Hudson River. The clients sought to adapt the existing structure—which had well-proportioned rooms but a disconnected plan suited for formal living—to support family life and to connect more fully with the surrounding park-like setting. Andrew Berman Architect reconfigured the interiors by introducing a helical stairway through the center of the house, enabling improved movement and stronger links between floors. Select windows and doors were enlarged or replaced to better frame views of the landscape. The design added usable outdoor space, including a seventy-foot deck along the west side to serve as an exterior room and the conversion of flat rooftop sections into decks or planted areas with wildflowers. The interventions balanced respect for the home's original proportions with contemporary strategies for openness, light, and landscape integration.
