Islesboro Residence

Islesboro Residence is a 5,800-square-foot project by Andrew Berman Architect, completed in 2014 on a peninsula off the coast of Maine. The property extends across varied topography, featuring meadows, wooded areas, and tidal pools, with the shoreline subject to a pronounced tidal shift. Views to Penobscot Bay and the distant Camden Hills, along with the site's shifting elevations and prevailing coastal conditions, set the agenda for the overall organization and placement of three distinct structures: a main residence, a boathouse with dock, and a studio. The aim was to encourage engagement with the landscape, making movement between the buildings a way to experience the peninsula's changing character. Each building is constructed with a wood frame and finished with stained cedar, responding both to the immediate coastal context and regional construction practices. In places, structure is left visible, emphasizing directness and craft, while in others it is concealed for shelter or privacy. The siting and articulation of openings consider orientation to daylight and breezes, while the material palette and building forms draw from local precedents. This approach creates a modern ensemble closely attuned to its dynamic site.
