Hazelbaker Rush — 2023

Kitchen with wood cabinetry, floating shelves, and a wood island with open shelving.

Catalinavista is a renovation and addition to a 1940s residence in the Catalina Vista neighborhood, completed by Hazelbaker Rush in 2023. The project addressed the need for more space and improved connections within the house while respecting the original scale. The design brief called for enlarging both living and sleeping areas to bring in more natural light and enhance the openness of the plan. The intervention maintained a modest approach, with a limited material palette chosen to establish visual continuity throughout the expanded footprint. Original elements were retained where possible, and new work was integrated to further strengthen the character of the home. The revised spaces were designed to support everyday activities—listening to records, informal work, social gatherings, and quiet reading—while prioritizing access to northern light and a sense of harmony.
