Heliotrope Architects — Seattle, WA, 1933

Loyal Captain is an addition and landscape renewal for a designated historic residence in Seattle, originally built in 1933 for ship captain Ole E. Nilson, who modeled it after his childhood home in Bergen, Norway. The project responds to the home's existing craftsmanship and the Scandinavian vernacular style that defines the original structure. Heliotrope Architects were selected by the owners, a young family, to address the challenges of an undersized kitchen while preserving the integrity of the site and house. The new kitchen addition takes the form of a contemporary post-and-beam pavilion set alongside the existing home. Designed to be clearly distinct yet sympathetic, the extension maintains the original residence’s character while establishing a meaningful dialogue between the two structures and their landscaped setting. Material selection and detailing in the new construction were held to a standard comparable to the original, ensuring the intervention contributes a considered new layer to the house’s evolving story.
