Wimberley Residence

Completed in 2023, the Wimberley Residence by HR Design Dept is a 900-square-foot retreat set in Wimberley, Texas. Conceived as a weekend escape from Houston, the house responds to its Hill Country site by forming a linear mass parallel to the entry drive, creating a pronounced visual boundary in the landscape. The house acts as both threshold and transect; a singular void in the massing marks the entry, channeling attention to the broad views beyond while framing the approach. The design maintains a consistent elevation along the site's main slope. At the east end, the building is embedded within a grove of trees, grounding the house and reinforcing a tangible connection to the terrain. Toward the opposite end, the structure is lifted above the ground, culminating in a balcony defined by another void. This shift intensifies sensory engagement with the landscape through elevated views and exposure to environmental elements. The interior spaces follow a programmatic gradient along this axis: communal rooms and guest areas cluster near the grounded deck, while the primary and children's bedrooms are more secluded and positioned over the slope, each opening to landscape views on both sides.
