Ravine Reimagined

Ravine Reimagined is a custom residence designed by Jaffe Architecture, set above a wooded ravine in Highland Park, Illinois. The house is sited on a North Shore property bordered by a dramatic 25-foot slope and approached by a winding road with glimpses of Lake Michigan. The design responds to the clients' desire for a long-term, modern retreat that fosters a close relationship with nature, prioritizes comfort, and accommodates aging in place. The brief called for spaces that are both serene and adaptable, replacing a former temporary dwelling with a home that emphasizes permanence and ease of living. Natural materials and a subdued palette were selected to allow the landscape to remain visually prominent. Retaining walls and a carefully positioned motor court organize the arrival sequence, while large window openings and a consistent pattern of materials frame varying vistas and modulate daylight. The interior program includes a light-filled home office, a kitchen tailored for baking, a gym oriented toward the ravine, and an elevator—each feature supporting wellness and accessibility. A screened porch, designed for four-season use, strengthens the indoor-outdoor connection. Architectural details throughout reference the asymmetry and organic forms of the surrounding ravine, with material choices intended to age gracefully over time.
