JHL Design — Perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean

Entrance view of Shelter House featuring natural wood siding, flat roof, and large horizontal windows above the door and garage.

Shelter House, designed by JHL Design, is situated on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The brief focused on creating a custom residence that responds to its dramatic coastal site, with the architecture remaining secondary to the landscape. Long-time clients engaged the architects to handle the design at every scale, from the building’s form to its smallest interior details. The home is defined by an origami-influenced roofline that rises and falls, echoing the profile of the Northern Oregon Coast Range visible nearby. Warm, earthy interior finishes, developed in collaboration with RESIDENTIAL Custom Homes Interiors, provide a counterbalance to the sweeping ocean views. Every decision was guided by a careful interplay between solid form and the outward-looking atmosphere the site commands.
