Hillside House entrance features concrete walls and drought-tolerant landscaping with ornamental grasses and shrubs.

Hillside House is a new-build residence designed by JHL Design, situated on a site with far-reaching views over Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The brief emphasized maximizing vistas to the west and north while making full use of natural daylight. The arrangement of the plan, layout, and elevations was driven by these outlooks, as well as the clients’ desire for morning sunlight in the kitchen to support daily routines. The design allows for filtered north light throughout the day, while early sunlight from the east is prioritized in the kitchen area. Interior color selections and material choices echo the site’s natural context, drawing from the red earth, indigenous grasses, and native vegetation visible around the property. RESIDENTIAL Custom Homes Interiors collaborated on the interiors, contributing to an approach that connects the enclosed spaces with the surrounding landscape through both palette and form.
