Manakin Residence

Manakin Residence is a family home designed by Josh McCullar | SMBW, completed in 2022 in eastern Goochland County, Virginia. The site is situated within walking distance of the James River and near Tuckahoe Plantation. The proximity to these landmarks informed the home's orientation and integration with its immediate landscape, prioritizing views and accessibility in a setting with both historical and natural context. The design incorporates a combination of contemporary, modern, and traditional elements expressed in material selection and detailing. Exterior walls utilize natural dark manganese ironspot brick and traditional red brick finished in a mineral-based quartz-lime whitewash. Cedar and reclaimed Virginia-sourced white oak are used for warmth and texture. Interior features include custom blackened steel stair railings and detailed millwork. Landscape design was handled in-house and realized by Sneed’s Landscaping, while site lighting was developed in collaboration with Inaray Design Group.
