VILLA VIRGINIA

Villa Virginia is a contemporary private residence in Villa, Virginia, completed in 2015 by Josh McCullar in collaboration with SMBW. Positioned on a wooded hillside overlooking a tributary of the James River, the project responds to a site bordered by water on three sides. The brief called for a modern home that engages its natural context while supporting both family living and entertaining. The residence is characterized by a linear arrangement of spaces along the hilltop, with a central entry sequence defined by a tall bronze plate portal. Materials including limestone, bronze, and extensive glass are used throughout, emphasizing clarity of form and visual connections to the landscape. Bespoke millwork organizes primary living and gathering areas, which open to a private terrace at the rear of the central volume. Subterranean spaces, including wine cellars, a spa, and a theater, are integrated beneath the main house and connect to gardens, a lower pool deck, and a boat dock. Landscape design by Gregg Bleam and garden elements by David Harber contribute to a cohesive relationship between the architecture and its setting.
