William Robert Winery

William Robert Winery is a residential conversion project by Kirkpatrick Architects, located among the vineyards and oak-dotted hills of Paso Robles, California. The project involved adapting a traditional barn structure within a working winery setting, with the intent to provide both a residence and a close relationship to the surrounding landscape. The siting and planning were informed by views across the vineyards and a desire to maintain the barn's original agricultural character while integrating contemporary elements suitable for a modern home. The design preserves the barn form while introducing expansive glazing, including floor-to-ceiling windows framing the landscape. The interior makes use of rustic detailing, such as exposed wood and rope accents, paired with modern finishes. The plan incorporates communal living spaces oriented toward curated views, as well as porches that serve as intermediaries between interior and exterior. The integration of native plantings, coordinated with the property’s landscape consultant, reinforces the project's connection to the local environment.
