mw | works architecture + design — Western Avenue West Seattle, WA

Case Inlet Retreat is a 2,200-square-foot residence by MW | Works Architecture + Design, located on Western Avenue in West Seattle, Washington. The project is situated on a forested slope overlooking the eastern edge of Case Inlet and was designed to maximize views to the west, including the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. The surrounding woodland and the orientation toward these natural features drove the architectural response, with a strong emphasis on connecting interior spaces to the landscape. The design arranges a weathered cedar-clad bedroom wing along the slope, with a concrete cantilever projecting the main living and dining areas toward the forest and distant view. An ipe deck extends directly from the kitchen into a southern meadow, separated by large sliding glass doors that visually and physically link the interior to the outdoors. A flat roof plane sits high above the living spaces, enhancing the sense of openness beneath the tree canopy. Discreet openings in the bedroom volume, along with a single large window in the master bath, emphasize privacy while framing views. Materials have been selected for durability and minimal maintenance, in keeping with the rural context and the project’s minimal, modern sensibility.
