Shetland Lane House

Shetland Lane House exterior features large black window frames and a landscaped pathway in front.

Shetland Lane House is a two-story contemporary residence designed for a multigenerational family on a distinctive wedge-shaped lot with eleven mature trees. The program called for a balance between openness and privacy, as well as accommodation for aging in place, shaping both the layout and detailing of the home. To mediate transparency and seclusion, the architects oriented windows and patio doors toward internal north and south courtyards, promoting indoor-outdoor connections while maintaining privacy from the street. Wide passageways, barn doors, and accessible wet zones in the primary bathroom anticipate changing mobility needs. Open, uninterrupted living spaces facilitate flexible use by three generations. Interior finishes feature rich colors and resilient materials that highlight the owners’ art collection and require minimal maintenance during extended absences.
