Bellaire Porch House

Bellaire Porch House sits in an urban Houston neighborhood on a compact site, with the brief centering on creating a flexible, sustainable family home deeply connected to the outdoors. The project originated from Lake/Flato’s Porch House system, adapted by Natalye Appel + Associates Architects in collaboration with Lake/Flato to meet the particular requirements of the clients. The approach was driven by priorities of high durability and sustainability, with the design ultimately achieving LEED certification. The plan organizes the residence into distinct living and sleeping wings that partially enclose a series of courtyards, maximizing natural light and fostering strong physical and visual connections between indoors and outdoors. These courtyard arrangements support outdoor living and allow for cross-ventilation throughout the interiors. Interior design by Trina Jones Stanfield and landscape work by The Office of James Burnett further enhance the relationship between architecture and site. Robust, sustainable materials and efficient systems were selected to meet the project’s long-term performance goals while supporting a contemporary expression appropriate to the neighborhood context.
