Lake House

Lake House is a residence designed by Olson Kundig Architects on the shore of Lake Washington. The project brief emphasized a close connection to both nature and art, alongside a strong commitment to sustainable design principles. The orientation of the house was carefully determined in response to environmental factors including the sun's path, prevailing winds, and the position of established shade trees. Consideration was also given to the clients' wish to make frequent active use of the outdoor areas surrounding their home, from gardening to dining and entertaining, while maintaining clear views across the lake. The design organizes living spaces to maximize both passive environmental benefits and visual access to the landscape, with interior rooms positioned for natural airflow and daylighting. Multiple exterior courtyards and terraces are integrated throughout, allowing the house to be opened to the outdoors and supporting a lifestyle that blends interior and exterior activities. This strategy not only enhances the occupants’ experiences but also reinforces the sustainable intent by harnessing local microclimate advantages and reducing reliance on mechanical systems.
