Robert Siegel Architects

House 125 by Robert Siegel Architects features modern white walls with extensive glazing facing a natural setting.

House 125 is a 2,500 square foot addition designed by Robert Siegel Architects for a mid-century modern residence originally completed by Edward Larrabee Barnes in 1974. Positioned on a sloped site overlooking the Hudson River Valley, the project brief called for a new study and master bedroom suite with enhanced views, along with expanded amenities including a wine tasting room, gallery, gym, and storage on the lower level. The addition is elevated above the original house to maximize outlook and privacy without impacting the home’s existing massing as seen from the northern entry court. A design analysis of six Barnes houses, focusing on their use of courtyards and interplay of building masses, shaped the approach. The addition is conceived as a fifth, narrow volume that projects further south than the existing house, opening to wooded areas of the lot. Reinforced concrete foundation walls and double wood stud exterior wall construction support the large sliding doors, which can disappear into the walls when opened, and permit expansive glazing. Materials and door scales continue the language of the original structure, creating cohesion while introducing modern systems throughout.
