HOLLYWOOD REGENCY STYLE ESTATE

The Hollywood Regency Style Estate on East Mountain Drive in Montecito is a comprehensive restoration and renovation of a residence originally designed by John Elgin Woolf. Completed in 2021 by Maienza + Wilson, the brief was driven by the property's legacy—a prominent example of mid-century Hollywood Regency left in disrepair. The architects consulted Woolf's original archives to guide a process that would balance historic reconstruction with updated spatial and material strategies for contemporary use. The design reinstates key dramatic features characteristic of Woolf’s style, integrating them with modern interventions. The floor plan was refined to include updated bathrooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a wine cellar, and a dual-function pool house and guest residence. Material selections mix high-gloss architectural details with matte finishes and classic wallpapers, using Farrow & Ball paints and wallcoverings to articulate contrast throughout the interiors. This approach highlights the interplay of period detailing and current standards of comfort and amenity, creating a residence that references both traditional Hollywood Regency and modern architectural sensibilities.
