Blue J

Blue J is a residence designed by Shape Architecture Studio on a hillside near Twin Lakes, Colorado. The project responds to its rugged setting with roof forms that angle upward, aligning both with mountain views and the surrounding terrain while providing covered outdoor areas. The clients sought a high-performance, energy-efficient home suited to the mountain climate and the demands of year-round living at elevation. Key design features include an all-electric mechanical system comprising an air-to-water heat pump and a heat recovery ventilator, which together support efficient operation in all seasons. The building envelope is characterized by well-insulated walls and high-performance windows, supported by passive solar strategies to enhance energy resilience and maintain consistent thermal comfort. The integration of these systems and materials underlines the project’s focus on environmental performance and occupant comfort in a challenging landscape.
