Ballard Gear Shed

Ballard Gear Shed, completed in 2026 by SHED Architecture & Design in Seattle, Washington, serves as an auxiliary structure positioned to extend the existing driveway and establish a courtyard. The project brief called for dedicated zones to facilitate van maintenance, gear organization, and informal gatherings, responding to the client’s practical requirements and the site’s circulation patterns. The north portion of the shed includes a garage with exposed roof trusses intended for significant storage capacity, while the south side functions as a flexible space equipped with a bathroom, kitchenette, and loft. The loft accommodates overflow storage and occasional sleeping. Exterior materials—including vertical cedar siding and standing seam metal roofing—were selected to coordinate with the primary residence. Plywood wall linings and concrete floors contribute to a robust and utilitarian interior. Structural steel posts with welded attachment loops enable hammock use within the sheltered courtyard and porch area.
