Union Bay Residence, completed by Silk Cavassa Marchetti in 2021, is situated on a gently sloping site along Lake Washington in Seattle’s Laurelhurst neighborhood. The project was shaped by a brief calling for a home that could serve a growing family of five and support comfortable entertaining. The house employs an open layout anchored by a double-height living room at the core, with adjacent kitchen and family spaces. A walkway on the upper floor provides access between bedrooms and looks onto the living area, further integrating family spaces.
Given the dense residential context, the street-facing façade incorporates limited glazing for privacy, offset by wood-clad projection bays that introduce a three-dimensional element to the exterior. Materials include brick at the base level and cedar siding above, establishing a clear architectural hierarchy. The lake-facing side maximizes transparency with large expanses of high-performance glass, offering panoramic views and electronically operated panels. Internally, a sculptural stair in dark marble and oak connects all levels, while earthy interior finishes and exposed structural elements establish a tailored but natural aesthetic. Outdoor amenities include a terrace, pool, and spa, with comfort supported by radiant heating powered by a geothermal system.
