Tangled Ride is a family home designed by Silk Cavassa Marchetti on Mercer Island’s western shore, overlooking Lake Washington and the Olympic Mountains. The brief called for a peaceful retreat reminiscent of shingle-style houses found in northeastern coastal states, suited to a family of four seeking respite from urban life in Seattle and Bellevue. The landscape was realized collaboratively by the contractor and owners. The design adapts traditional shingle-style forms and detailing to a contemporary plan with interconnected main living spaces and ten-foot ceilings on the main floor. Expansive glazing frames wide views and provides visual continuity with the water and mountains, while banks of doors open to a full-length terrace that includes a covered area for all-weather use. Interiors employ a light, subdued palette for most rooms, with deeper hues in the living room to create a distinct, intimate zone. High windows and skylights bring daylight deep into the central hall and stair, reducing reliance on artificial light. Geothermal wells support the heating and cooling systems to increase energy efficiency.
