Silo Architecture + Design — 2007
Herb Farm House is a residential project completed in 2007 by Silo Architecture + Design. The brief called for a contemporary home that acknowledges the agricultural context, referencing local agrarian structures through its forms and material choices. An extended pre-design and site analysis phase, undertaken with consultant Mark Johnson, informed both the building’s placement and its relationship to the surrounding landscape. The site strategy prioritized solar orientation, summer breeze patterns, existing vegetation, site drainage, and privacy, all while aiming to preserve mature gardens and an established orchard. The design employs forms and materials that evoke the area's agricultural heritage within a modern framework. Structures are situated to minimize ecological disruption and maximize natural site attributes. Sustainable design principles guided the construction, with a particular emphasis on integrating new elements into the landscape while maintaining respect for the site's historical layers. The resulting house is characterized by a measured response to its rural context and careful stewardship of the existing environment.
