Mountain Retreat

Mountain Retreat by Clinkston Brunner Architects is a weekend and vacation residence situated near Roslyn, Washington, within the Cascade Mountains. The project responds to site constraints by organizing its buildings to create a semi-public arrival zone distinct from a private courtyard, using a bridge as a spatial threshold. The exterior and interior are guided by a 'transitional' approach, blending influences from both traditional lodge architecture and contemporary design. Structural elements are clearly expressed, with timber columns and steel beams prominently featured at the bridge and in the Greatroom, shaping both the spatial layout and visual character. The design incorporates accessible features to accommodate a family member who uses a wheelchair, including an elevator, an upper-level bridge, generous turning spaces, and a roll-in shower. These functional elements are integrated within the overall architectural composition, maintaining clear circulation and coherence throughout the home.
