Historic Preservation is a 1,778-square-foot residence designed by Skiles Architect on a compact site near downtown Fayetteville, bordering residential and commercial neighbors. The project responds to its constrained lot with a 'C' shaped or H-plan layout that provides privacy, draws light deep into the interiors, and enhances access to connected outdoor spaces. The planning integrates a formal entry courtyard as well as a private rear courtyard featuring a linear pool and a pavilion for dining and grilling. A cut-and-fill grading approach was employed to embed the house discreetly into the sloped terrain. Interior spaces are organized around a great room with custom wood trusses and a vaulted ceiling, amplifying the sense of openness. Clerestory windows and strategically placed glazing frame views to treetops and the landscape while maximizing daylight. Materials include durable metal cladding, polished concrete floors with river pebble aggregate, and custom walnut cabinetry. Outdoor living extends under a broad shed roof, sheltering a 261-square-foot covered deck and a 581-square-foot carport. The home employs passive solar features and energy-efficient strategies, resulting in a HERs rating of 66. Architectural elements such as a front porch screen with counterweight shutter and exterior wood trellis further manage light and privacy.
