SPG Architects — Costa Rica
Fundecor Headquarters by SPG Architects is sited on approximately 28 acres in Costa Rica for a non-profit organization focused on conservation. The design brief required a diverse set of functions, including offices, a cafeteria, an auditorium, accommodations for visiting researchers, and a dedicated shelter for wild bats. The architects positioned the 6,500 square foot building to minimize its visual impact, with only the entry structure visible upon arrival amidst the rolling landscape. The planning orients primary spaces to the north to reduce solar gain and utilize passive cooling, enhanced further through the use of brise soleil. Circulation is organized along a south-north axis guiding visitors from transit access toward the building, and an east-west axis structuring internal movement. Sustainable measures are integrated throughout, such as rainwater harvesting systems, solar panels for energy, and extensive green roofs that support both energy efficiency and water management.
